Manny Pacquiao Stamps Mania!

Getting your face on a stamp is a great honor. You need to be famous to gain the prestige of having your mug on a stamp. Of course, if you're a member of an endangered species then you probably won't have any difficulty in seeing yourself in the mail. Anyway, enough with the corny jokes. I just found out that postage stamps featuring Pinoy boxing icon, Manny Pacquiao, went on sale a few days ago.

The initial offering of four Manny Pacquiao stamps mounted on a cover and costing P7 each. This is a clear indication that Pacquiao will be known as one of the great sports heroes in Philippine sports. I think I need to find out where I can get these stamps. Someday I might be able to tell my children and grand children the story behind the stamps of a smiling guy with boxing gloves.


Manny Pacquiao Training Camp Updates

At the moment, the Philippine boxing hero is busy preparing for his lightweight debut against WBC champ David Diaz. This boxing event has been named “Lethal Combination” and will be held at the Mandalay Bay Resort Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas on June 28.

To promote this lightweight showdown, Pacquiao and Diaz held a free public workout at the West Wind Martial Arts School in Berkley. Both fighters captivated fans with their pugilistic skills and whetted their appetites for the showdown at Las Vegas.

Reports say that trainer Freddie Roach has recruited an aggressive southpaw to help Pacquiao prepare for Diaz. Diaz is a southpaw like Pacquiao so this will be an interesting fight. Most of Pacquiao's opponents have been orthodox fighters so it will be interesting to see how Pacquiao handles Diaz.

Some boxing experts say that that Pacquiao's southpaw stance has been a big advantage against his opponents. Indeed Pacquiao has been considered a rare breed among south paws because of his punching power. Powerful lefties are apparently a rare breed in boxing. Now the question is, will he lose this advantage against Diaz. I guess we'll have to see. Perhaps Diaz will also find difficulty in facing another south paw.

Then there is also the question of the new weight class. Will the Filipino boxing phenom lose all the attributes that made him successful when he steps up in weight? If Pacquiao loses his power and speed then he will find it difficult to be effective against Diaz. Pacquiao's strength has always been his offense. How can he win if he can't hurt Diaz? I guess we'll find out on June 28.

Pacman vs. Baby Faced Assasin 2!

Manny Pacquiao is all set for tuning up for another super fight now that all the lawsuits have been settled. The Filipino junior lightweight superstar is set to leave the Philippines for the US this week to start training at the Wild Card Gym. He is scheduled for a rematch against Mexican legend Marco Antonio Barrera at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada in Oct. 6.

Now that he has no major distractions, Manny can focus on his training for a big money fight. As for his motivation, he could earn between $6 million to $10 million in purse prize alone for the upcoming super fight and plenty more if he can win it in impressive fashion.

All I can say with this matter is, "lets get it on!!!" This fight is winnable for Manny, basing on their first encounter, where he destroyed Barrera in eleven rounds. However, that was a few years ago and things have changed. Maybe Barrera can pull it off or maybe Pacquiao will destroy him in fewer rounds. I guess we can only truly tell when the two fighters meet and slug it out inside the ring.

Bobby Pacquiao is Working Hard for His Upcoming Bout

There has been so much buzz about Manny Pacquiao's congressional bid that almost no attention has been given to his brother's upcoming bout. Bobby Pacquiao has a record of 27-12-3 with 12 knockouts while Soto's record is 41-5-2 with 25 KO's. He is coming off a third round TKO win against Humberto Toledo last February 22.

According to journalist Winchell Campos, Bobby Pacquiao who faces WBC super featherweight No. 2 contender Humberto Soto, is ”looking good.” Soto won a title eliminator over Ivan Valle last August 12. Campos added that, Bobby was “working harder than ever” in preparation for his June 9 showdown with Soto at New York’s famed Madison Square Garden. Of course, they were disappointed over Manny’s defeat in the congressional elections. Bobby is currently training under celebrated two-time “Trainer of the Year” Freddie Roach and has reportedly “changed his mental outlook” for the better.

Bobby Pacquiao is expected to give Soto who is handled by Top Rank promoter Bob Arum some problems as he has looked good in sparring. Soto is among four possible opponents of Manny Pacquiao that are being considered by Bob Arum. However, he first needs to overcome the challenge posed by the younger Pacquiao.

Pacquiao on The Verge of being KO'd on Congressional Bid

According to partial and unofficial results of the election, Opposition Rep. Darlene Antonino-Custodio continues to pile up her lead over boxing icon Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao. The incumbent, Custodio garnered 16,755 votes while Pacquiao only got 9,133 in the quick count of the National Citizens Movement for Free Elections (Namfrel), as of 1:18 p.m. yesterday. This count was held at the Marist-run Notre Dame of Dadiangas College in General Santos City, South Cotabato.

The Namfrel tally represents 21.29 percent of the 1,461 precincts in the first district of South Cotabato, which covers General Santos City and the municipalities of Polomolok, Tupi and Tampakan.

Custodio is running under the banner of the Nationalist People’s Coalition and local political party Achievers with Integrity Movement (NPC-AIM). On the other hand Pacquiao, is being backed by President Arroyo’s party Kabalikat ng Mamamayang Pilipino (Kampi).

Pacquiao, however, says he remains hopeful in his bid for a congressional seat. In fact, the boxing icon sounded hopeful and unconceding, “The counting is not yet over”, when he was asked on Monday night by a reporter about his plans after the election. He also went on radio hours after the polling, thanking his supporters for their votes.

To be honest, I feel happy about the results of this quick count not only because Pacquiao is losing but also because the Filipino voters seems to have matured. They are no longer voting for the more popular but less qualified candidate like they often did in the past. Perhaps they realized that electing actors for public positions is not the best practice. Or maybe they just used their common sense and decided that Pacquiao is not fit for public office.

Nevertheless, this impending loss should teach Pacquiao a lesson. The political arena is so much different from the boxing arena that he dominates. He should just set aside his political amnbitions at this time and concentrate on his boxing career.
